Flinders was a captain in the navy, hydrographer and discoverer. On 24 Jan. 1801 he was given command of HM Sloop Investigator, and was subsequently promoted to the rank of Commander, for the purpose of surveying the coast of Australia. Dutch sea-captain who explored the southwest coast of Australia (then "New Holland") in the late 17th century. His expedition left Amsterdam in 1696 looking for the "Ridderschap van Holland". He discovered Rottnest Island on 29 December 1696 and the Swan River on 10 January 1697. He travelled 80 kms inland on the Swan River with ship's artist Victorszoon, making pictorials of the coast. In 1800 Louis de Freycinet joined an expedition under Nicolas Baudin to explore the south and south-west coasts of Australia in the ships Naturaliste and Geographe.
